THE HISTORY OF A SURREY VILLAGE

MAPS
Below we have a variety of maps from different periods. It is amusing to see some of the variation in spellings and that may have been due to -
-
the surveyor misunderstood the name given to him by a local
-
the spelling was different in those days and/or spelling was quite variable anyway
-
the draftsman couldn’t decipher the surveyors writing
-
the etcher, working in reverse to make the printing plate, made a mistake or couldn’t decipher the text.

This map shows the plots of land up near the Forest King pub, The pub and garden is shown in the red area, the blue area is just arable land unoccupied and the other area marked as being owned by Emily Miles has a small dwelling on it. That area is now where Theobolds stands.
