MAPS

Below we have a variety of maps from different periods. It is amusing to see some of the variation in spellings and that may have been due to -

  • the surveyor misunderstood the name given to him by a local

  • the spelling was different in those days and/or spelling was quite variable anyway

  • the draftsman couldn’t decipher the surveyors writing

  • the etcher, working in reverse to make the printing plate, made a mistake or couldn’t decipher the text.
